Today, we want to reflect on a truth that is both beautiful and challenging: the church, the body of Christ, is one. Though made up of many members, it is unified by the work of the Holy Spirit, with each person uniquely gifted and indispensable to its life and mission.
In 1 Corinthians 12:12–31, Paul paints a vivid picture of the church using the metaphor of a body. He addresses a congregation tempted to divide over spiritual gifts, pride, and a misunderstanding of their roles. His message is clear: the church’s unity and diversity are not contradictions—they are complementary truths that reveal the wisdom of God.
As we journey through this passage, we’ll consider how Paul’s teaching applies to us today. We’ll explore how Christ Himself fulfills this passage, uniting His church and equipping us to live as His body. And we’ll ask pointed questions of ourselves: Are we honoring the unity of the church? Are we using our gifts faithfully? Are we living as Christ’s body in the world?
Theme and Purpose
The theme of today’s sermon is this: The unity and diversity of the body of Christ demonstrate God’s wisdom and call us to humble, loving service.
Let us begin by considering Paul’s opening assertion in verse 12: “For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.” This is a call to live in a way that reflects the gospel, the very work of Christ, who died to unite us into one body.
