Psalm 3 Trusting in the Lord Amidst Trials
Psalm 3 was written during one of the darkest moments of King David’s life. His own son, Absalom, had risen up in rebellion against him, leading a coup that forced David to flee from Jerusalem in fear for his life. Imagine the deep distress of this moment: the betrayal of a son, the loss of a kingdom, and the rising tide of enemies who sought David’s downfall. Psalm 3 captures David’s heart in this moment of overwhelming trial and deep personal suffering. He is surrounded, besieged, and outnumbered—but his response is not despair. It is a prayer of faith.
In this psalm, we find a remarkable expression of trust in God, even when everything around David seemed to be falling apart. David’s words reflect a confidence that, despite the appearance of defeat, God is still his shield, his glory, and the one who will lift his head. He knew that no matter how many enemies surrounded him, the Lord alone was his salvation.
This psalm, however, goes beyond David’s immediate circumstances. It ultimately finds its fulfillment in Christ, the true and greater David. Christ, too, was surrounded by enemies, betrayed by one of His own, and faced overwhelming opposition. Yet, He entrusted Himself to the Father’s care, even to the point of death, and was vindicated through His resurrection. In this psalm, we see a foreshadowing of Christ’s victory over sin, death, and Satan—our ultimate enemies.
As we look at this psalm this evening, the main theme we will focus on is trusting in the Lord during times of great adversity. Just as David placed his trust in God in the face of betrayal and danger, and just as Christ exemplified perfect trust in the Father, we too are called to trust in God’s protection, peace, and deliverance in the midst of our own trials. And it is through Christ’s victory that we are enabled to live out this trust, no matter what challenges we face.
