Devotional 3: “Called to Holiness”

Scripture Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:2

Reflection: In 1 Corinthians 1:2, Paul addresses the believers in Corinth as “those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints.” This designation is both an affirmation of their current status and a call to a future reality. To be sanctified means to be set apart for a holy purpose. As believers, we are declared holy because of our union with Christ, and yet we are also called to pursue holiness in our daily lives.

Sanctification is a dual process—an initial act of being made holy at the moment of salvation and an ongoing journey of becoming more like Christ. Reflect on your own journey of sanctification. In what areas of your life have you seen God’s transformative work? Where is He calling you to grow in holiness and purity?

Being “called to be saints” is a call to live a life that reflects our holy status. This means striving to align our thoughts, actions, and desires with God’s will. It is a daily commitment to walk in the Spirit and to reject the patterns of the world. As we grow in holiness, we become more attuned to God’s voice and more effective witnesses of His grace and truth.

  • Self-Examination: Take time to examine your life in light of God’s call to holiness. Are there areas where you need to seek God’s forgiveness and transformation? Confess these areas to God and ask for His sanctifying grace.
  • Pursue Holiness: Identify specific ways you can pursue holiness in your daily routine. This might include regular prayer and Bible study, cultivating godly relationships, and avoiding activities that hinder your spiritual growth.
  • Encourage Others: As you pursue holiness, encourage others in their journey as well. Share your experiences and support one another in striving to live lives that reflect Christ’s character.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for sanctifying me in Christ Jesus and calling me to be a saint. Help me to live out this calling every day, growing in holiness and reflecting Your character in all that I do. Strengthen me by Your Spirit to resist temptation and to walk in obedience to Your will. May my life be a testimony of Your transforming power. Amen.

Scripture for Further Meditation:

  • 1 Peter 1:15-16: “But as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, ‘You shall be holy, for I am holy.'”
  • Hebrews 12:14: “Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.”

As you meditate on these scriptures, let them inspire you to pursue a deeper level of holiness in your life. Recognize that this pursuit is not about achieving perfection on your own, but about surrendering to the Holy Spirit and allowing Him to shape you into the image of Christ. Embrace the call to be a saint, and let your life be a reflection of God’s holiness to the world around you.
