Wednesday: Practicing Servant Leadership

Scripture Reading: John 13:12-17

“When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, ‘Do you understand what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.’”

Reflection: In this passage, Jesus sets an extraordinary example of servant leadership by washing the feet of His disciples, an act traditionally performed by servants. This was not merely a symbolic act but a profound demonstration of humility and service, underscoring that true leadership is rooted in serving others.

As you reflect tonight, consider the areas in your life where you hold influence or authority. This could be at home, in your workplace, within your church, or even among your friends.

• How do you typically exercise this influence?

• Are there opportunities where you could serve more and lead from a place of humility?

Consider the impact of servant leadership:

• It builds trust and strengthens relationships.

• It fosters a culture of respect and mutual support.

• It encourages others to also act with humility and service.

Application:

• Identify a specific situation where you can serve someone in your community or workplace this week. It might be helping a colleague with a challenging task, taking time to listen to someone who is struggling, or volunteering for a menial job no one else wants to do.

• Reflect on how adopting a servant leadership style in your family could change the dynamics. Perhaps taking on more responsibilities at home or supporting a family member in achieving their goals.

Prayer Focus: Gracious God, You have shown us through Your Son, Jesus, that the greatest leadership is expressed in service. Grant me the humility to serve those around me genuinely and selflessly. Help me to not seek recognition but to joyfully lift others up. Infuse my actions with Your love and grace, that I might lead by example, just as Jesus did. Teach me to embrace and practice servant leadership in every aspect of my life. Amen.

Use this devotional to deeply internalize the value of servant leadership, encouraging you to act in ways that reflect Christ’s love and humility, thereby transforming your environment and relationships.
