Day 4 Devotional: Standing on God’s Promises

Scripture Reading: Judges 11:21-24

“And the Lord, the God of Israel, gave Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they defeated them. So Israel took possession of all the land of the Ammonites, who lived in that country. And they took possession of all the territory of the Ammonites, from the Arnon to the Jabbok and from the wilderness to the Jordan. So now the Lord, the God of Israel, has dispossessed the Ammonites from before his people Israel, and should you possess it? Will you not possess what Chemosh your god gives you to possess? And all that the Lord our God has dispossessed before us, we will possess.”

In his dialogue with the Ammonites, Jephthah firmly stood on the historical actions and promises of God to defend Israel’s right to the land. This defense wasn’t merely a claim of conquest but a declaration of divine providence and fulfillment of God’s promises. This part of Jephthah’s story invites us to consider how well we understand and stand on the promises God has given us through His Word.

Think about the promises of God you are aware of. Are there specific promises that you find particularly relevant to your current life circumstances? How do these promises affect your decisions, your feelings of security, or your actions?

Choose one promise from Scripture that resonates with your current situation. It could be a promise of provision, protection, presence, or peace. Spend time meditating on this promise. Write it down and place it somewhere you will see regularly. Consider ways you can actively trust and lean on this promise daily.

Reflect on how embracing God’s promises more fully could change your approach to challenges and opportunities. How might a deeper trust in God’s faithfulness impact your relationships, your work, or your spiritual growth?

Prayer Focus:

Begin your prayer by thanking God for His steadfastness and the surety of His promises. Express gratitude for the specific promises that have been a source of strength and comfort in your life.

Ask God to increase your faith and help you rely more fully on His promises. Pray for the Holy Spirit to deepen your understanding of Scripture and to illuminate more of God’s promises as you read His Word.

Seek God’s help in applying His promises to your everyday life. Ask for the courage to stand firm on these promises, especially in times of uncertainty or challenge. Request that He remind you of His faithfulness when you are tempted to doubt or fear.

Conclude your prayer by committing to hold onto God’s promises, trusting that He who has been faithful will continue to be faithful. Ask for the peace that comes from knowing you are secure in God’s providential care, no matter the circumstances around you.
