Throughout 1 Corinthians, Paul addresses a church blessed with spiritual gifts but plagued by division, pride, and disorder. He consistently calls the Corinthians back to the gospel’s foundation—Christ crucified (1 Cor. 2:2)—and urges them to live worthy of their calling as saints.
In recent chapters, Paul focuses on corporate worship, which is more than a human activity; it is a divine appointment where believers gather to glorify God and edify one another. In chapter 12, Paul highlights the diversity of spiritual gifts given by one Spirit for the common good. Chapter 13 teaches that love must guide the use of these gifts, making even the greatest abilities meaningless without it. Now, in chapter 14, Paul stresses that love and the desire to build up the church must result in worship that is orderly and reflects God’s character.
Today’s passage, 1 Corinthians 14:26–40, corrects the chaos and selfishness affecting Corinthian worship, offering instead a vision of order, edification, and reverence. While we may not deal with tongues and prophecy as they did, Paul’s timeless principles challenge us to examine our worship. It should reflect the God of peace, not confusion.
As we study this text, may we come with hearts eager to align our worship with God’s purposes, seeing how Christ fulfills this vision and empowers us, by His Spirit, to build up His church and glorify His name.
