In 1 Corinthians 7, Paul addresses marriage, singleness, and sexual relationships, responding to questions from the Corinthian church. The Corinthians, caught between rampant immorality and asceticism, were debating whether true spirituality required avoiding marriage and sexual relations, even within marriage. Quoting a common view, “It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman” (v. 1), Paul’s response balances the value of celibacy and marriage, showing both as part of God’s design for believers.
Paul rejects both licentiousness and legalism, calling believers to honor God in marriage or singleness. His teaching reflects the gospel, showing how Christ, the true Bridegroom, fulfills the law of marriage and singleness. Christ has redeemed and sanctified His Bride, the Church, showing perfect love and devotion. Through His life, death, and resurrection, He gives believers the grace and strength to live faithfully, resist temptation, and love selflessly.
As we study this passage, we are reminded to look to Christ, who is our example, strength, and hope, enabling us to honor Him in whatever state we are called, whether in marriage or singleness.
