03 From Bitterness to Blessing – Ruth 1:19-22

03 From Bitterness to Blessing – Ruth 1:19-22

Preached at PM Worship Service 20 October 2024

Life is full of seasons—times of joy and times of hardship. Some of those seasons can hit us so hard that we’re left feeling empty, just like Naomi in the story of Ruth. Maybe you’ve been through moments where life seemed to drain everything good out of you, leaving you bitter and broken. You’re not alone. We see this very experience in Naomi, a woman who returned to her hometown with nothing but sorrow, having lost her husband and both of her sons. In Ruth 1:19-22, we meet Naomi in the depths of profound grief, feeling like God’s hand is against her.

But this passage doesn’t just leave us in the bitterness—it gives us a glimpse of hope. Naomi’s story is a reminder that even in our darkest moments, God’s providence is at work, often behind the scenes. Naomi couldn’t yet see it, but God had a plan for her—a plan of redemption and restoration.

So, how do we respond when we find ourselves feeling like Naomi—bitter, empty, and questioning what God is doing? Today, we’re going to look at how Christ brings fulfillment to this story and how He enables us to trust in God’s purposes, even when life feels unbearable. Through Naomi’s journey and Christ’s ultimate redemption, we will learn to see God’s hand at work, even in our emptiness.
