Q. 49. How did Christ humble himself in his death?
A. Christ humbled himself in his death, in that having been betrayed by Judas, forsaken by his disciples, scorned and rejected by the world, condemned by Pilate, and tormented by his persecutors; having also conflicted with the terrors of death and the powers of darkness, felt and borne the weight of God’s wrath, he laid down his life an offering for sin, enduring the painful, shameful, and cursed death of the cross.

Betrayed, Forsaken, and Rejected
Jesus’ journey to the cross began with betrayal by one of His closest followers, Judas Iscariot. This act of treachery was compounded by the fact that all His disciples, those who had walked with Him and witnessed His miracles, abandoned Him in His hour of need. The world scorned and rejected Him, choosing a criminal over the sinless Son of God. John 1:11 says, “He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him.”
Condemned and Tormented
Jesus was unjustly condemned by Pontius Pilate, a symbol of the world’s rejection of God’s righteous judgment. He endured severe physical and emotional torment at the hands of His persecutors. Isaiah 53:5 poignantly describes this suffering: “But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.”
Conflicted with Terrors and Powers
On the cross, Jesus faced not only physical pain but also the terrors of death and the powers of darkness. He experienced the full force of evil and sin’s consequences. He cried out in anguish, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46), expressing the depth of His suffering and separation from the Father.
Bearing God’s Wrath
