Q. 48. How did Christ humble himself in his life?
A. Christ humbled himself in his life, by subjecting himself to the law, which he perfectly fulfilled; and by conflicting with the indignities of the world, temptations of Satan, and infirmities in his flesh, whether common to the nature of man, or particularly accompanying that his low condition.

Title: The Humility of Christ’s Life

“And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.”
The life of Jesus Christ is a testament to profound humility. Though He was divine, He chose to live a life marked by submission, suffering, and service. Reflecting on how Christ humbled Himself in His life can deepen our understanding of His love and inspire us to follow His example.
Subjecting Himself to the Law
Jesus humbled Himself by subjecting Himself to the very law He established. Galatians 4:4-5 tells us, “But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.” Jesus perfectly fulfilled the law’s requirements, something no human could achieve. His obedience was not for His own benefit but for ours, securing our redemption and adoption into God’s family.
Conflicting with Indignities and Temptations
Throughout His life, Jesus faced the indignities of the world. He was born in a lowly manger, grew up in an insignificant town, and worked as a carpenter. He was often misunderstood, rejected, and despised by the very people He came to save. Isaiah 53:3 describes Him as “despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief.”
Jesus also faced relentless temptations from Satan. In the wilderness, after fasting for forty days and nights, He was tempted by the devil with offers of power, glory, and provision (Matthew 4:1-11). Yet, He remained sinless, resisting every temptation by relying on God’s Word. Hebrews 4:15 reassures us that we have a High Priest who “in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.”
Infirmities of the Flesh
Jesus experienced the common infirmities of human nature. He felt hunger, thirst, fatigue, and pain. In His humanity, He endured the limitations and sufferings that come with a fallen world. This was particularly evident in His low condition, as He did not seek comfort or ease but embraced a life of humility and service. Philippians 2:7 says, “He made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.”
The Purpose of His Humility
Christ’s humility in His life was purposeful. By fulfilling the law and living a perfect, obedient life, He became the spotless Lamb who could take away the sins of the world. His humble life also provided a perfect example for us to follow. He demonstrated what it means to live in complete submission to God, to love selflessly, and to serve others wholeheartedly.
Application: Follow His Example
As we reflect on Christ’s humble life, we are called to follow His example. We are to live in obedience to God’s commands, endure trials with patience, and serve others with humility and love.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, we are humbled by the example of Your life. Thank You for subjecting Yourself to the law and perfectly fulfilling it on our behalf. Help us to follow Your example of humility, obedience, and service. Strengthen us to endure trials and resist temptations, relying on Your power and grace. May our lives reflect Your love and bring glory to Your name. Amen.
