Brothers and sisters, we live in a time when trust is in short supply. News of fraud, scandal, and betrayal has made people cynical—especially when it comes to money and religion. But long before our day, the apostle Paul understood that gospel ministry must be adorned not only with truth, but with visible trustworthiness.
In 2 Corinthians 8, Paul has been urging the Corinthians to complete their promised offering for the poor saints in Jerusalem. But in verses 16 through 24, he pulls back the curtain and shows us how the offering will be handled—and who will be entrusted with it. He doesn’t merely say, “Trust me.” Instead, he gives a team of tested men, establishes open accountability, and calls the church to visible proof of love. This is not simply a matter of administration; it is pastoral theology in action.
And what shines through this passage is that Christ is not only the content of the gospel, but the shape of it. The men Paul commends are men whose character reflects Christ’s own: earnest in care, faithful in conduct, tested in service, and zealous for God’s glory. This is a model not just for ancient collections, but for every church, every ministry, and every Christian life today.
As we walk through this text, we will see:
- That gospel ministry is fueled by Christlike zeal,
- That it requires public integrity,
- That it is strengthened by tested partners, and
- That it must result in visible and verifiable love.
And behind it all, we will see how Christ fulfills this picture, and how He enables us to live it out. The world is watching. Let us give them something worth seeing—not self-exaltation, but Christ-exalting integrity and love.
