As we gather this evening, just days before the celebration of our Messiah’s birth, we find ourselves in a season where our thoughts and worship center on Christ’s entrance into the world. Yet, before there was a manger, before there were shepherds and angels singing, there was a story, a line of people, ordinary and unexpected, through whom God chose to bring His salvation to us.
This evening, we are going to look back at that line, specifically to the final verses in the book of Ruth — a genealogy. For some, genealogies might feel like lists of distant names, hard to connect to our present lives. But as we examine this passage, we’ll see that God is telling a story, weaving together generations through whom His promises unfold. It’s a story that moves from sorrow to redemption, from emptiness to fulfillment. And as it unfolds, it reaches forward to David and ultimately finds its culmination in Jesus Christ, the promised Redeemer.
As we close out our series in the book of Ruth, Ruth 4:18-22 recounts a history that reminds us of God’s unfailing faithfulness, as He fulfills His covenant promises through the lives of people often overlooked by the world. God’s hand is not absent in these details. He moves sovereignly in every generation, preserving, guiding, and redeeming — all the way to the coming of Christ.
This genealogy is more than a list of names. It reveals God’s faithful providence, His grace that grafts outsiders into His covenant family, and His redemptive plan that spans generations. Tonight, we’ll see how these final verses of Ruth point us to Jesus, showing us how all of God’s purposes find their fulfillment in Him, the One who would come as our ultimate Redeemer.
Lets be reminded that Christ did not arrive suddenly or out of nowhere; He came through a line prepared by God, each generation marked by His sovereign, gracious hand. And so, the story of Ruth’s family becomes part of our story — the story of God’s redeeming love that finds its fulfillment in Jesus Christ.
