Brothers and sisters in Christ, when Paul writes to the Galatians, he is speaking to people who were being tempted to go backward—to leave the freedom of the gospel and to return to the slavery of the Law. False teachers had crept in, insisting that faith in Christ was not enough. To be truly a child of God, they said, you needed circumcision, you needed to keep the Mosaic ceremonies, you needed to add something to Jesus.
But Paul will have none of it. To add anything to Christ is to lose Christ altogether. And so, in our passage today, Paul sets before us a vivid picture: the difference between being imprisoned under the Law and being freed as sons of God in Christ. He tells us who we were, who we are now, and what we have become in Christ Jesus.
Friends, these verses are meant to strengthen our assurance, to rebuke our pride, and to call us to live as heirs of God. Let us hear the Word of God.
