Thursday: The Purpose of Our Gifts

Scripture: “What I mean is that each one of you says, ‘I follow Paul,’ or ‘I follow Apollos,’ or ‘I follow Cephas,’ or ‘I follow Christ.'” – 1 Corinthians 1:12

Reflection: Today, let’s contemplate the way we use our spiritual gifts and the potential impact they have on our community. Paul’s letter highlights a significant issue in the Corinthian church, where members were using their gifts and allegiances to factional leaders as a means of elevating themselves over others. This misuse of gifts led to divisions rather than building up the church.

Reflect on your own spiritual gifts. Are they being used to promote unity and edify others, or have they become tools for personal advancement or division? Consider the motivations behind your involvement in church activities or ministries. Are they driven by a desire to serve and glorify Christ, or by personal preferences and loyalties to specific leaders or groups?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the spiritual gifts You have bestowed upon me. I ask for wisdom and humility to use these gifts for the purpose You intended— to edify the church and to promote unity among Your people. Help me to avoid the pitfalls of pride and division, and inspire me to use my talents to build others up in love. Grant me the courage to make changes where needed and to always prioritize Your will above all else. Amen.

Action Step: Identify a specific way in which you can use your spiritual gifts this week to foster unity and growth within your church or community. It could be offering to help reconcile differing parties, volunteering in a new ministry where your gifts can meet a need, or simply encouraging someone who is struggling. Make a plan to implement this action step, keeping in mind that the goal is to strengthen the collective body of Christ, not just individual interests.
