Psalm 22:1-21a The Cry from the Cross

Psalm 22:1-21a The Cry from the Cross

PM Service 27 July 2025

“Where do you turn when life falls apart? Do you cry out into the void, or to a God who hears — even when He seems silent?”

Psalm 22 begins with a cry that has echoed down through the centuries, reaching from David’s distress all the way to the cross of Christ:

“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (v. 1)

These words were first spoken by David in a season of deep suffering and spiritual anguish. He felt alone, overwhelmed, and abandoned by God. But these same words were taken up by Jesus as He hung on the cross, bearing the full weight of our sin and judgment. When our Savior cried out, “Why have You forsaken Me?” it was not because He had failed in obedience or faith — but because He was taking our place, enduring what we deserved.

Psalm 22 gives language to those moments when God seems far away. It’s a psalm for the hurting, the confused, and the weary. It reminds us that even the righteous — even the Son of God Himself — may walk through deep valleys where God’s presence seems hidden. And yet, even in the darkness, faith clings to the truth: “My God, My God.” That’s not a cry of unbelief — it’s a cry of faith that refuses to let go.

As we walk through these verses, we will see just how closely this psalm mirrors the suffering of our Lord Jesus Christ. The details — the mockery, the piercing, the dried-up strength, the divided garments — all point us to the cross. And in that, we find great hope.

Beloved, this psalm teaches us something essential: feeling forsaken does not mean we are forsaken. Jesus was truly forsaken so that you and I, through faith in Him, might never be. Because of His cross, we can be sure that even when we feel forgotten, God is still holding us fast.

So let us come to this psalm not only to understand David’s sorrow or to witness Christ’s suffering, but to learn how to bring our own sorrows to the Lord — trusting that He hears, even when He is silent, and that in Christ, our cries never go unanswered.
