While the book of Ruth is a short and simple narrative, its purpose is profound. It is, at its heart, a story of redemption—a theme that runs from the beginning to the end of Scripture. Through the lives of ordinary people—Naomi, Ruth, and Boaz—we see a beautiful tapestry of God’s covenant faithfulness woven into the fabric of everyday life.
Ruth, a Moabite widow, is not just a foreigner but a member of a nation historically hostile to Israel. Yet, she becomes a key figure in the lineage of King David, and ultimately, the Messiah, Jesus Christ. The book of Ruth reveals God’s providence in guiding Ruth and Naomi from a place of despair to a place of hope, from emptiness to fullness, and from death to life.
As we explore the book of Ruth, we see that it is not merely a story about individuals; it is a story that points us forward to the coming of Christ. Just as Ruth’s story is one of redemption, so is ours, and this story ultimately finds its fulfillment in the person and work of Jesus Christ—the true Redeemer.
