Qualifications of the Next Pastor Sought for Lebanon Presbyterian Church
Lebanon Presbyterian Church seeks a pastor who is first and foremost a man of sincere faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, called by God, qualified according to Scripture, and committed to the faithful ministry of Word, sacrament, and prayer. He should meet the biblical qualifications for an elder set forth in 1 Timothy 3:1–7, Titus 1:5–9, and 1 Peter 5:1–4, being above reproach, sober-minded, gentle, hospitable, able to teach, faithful in his household, and an example to the flock.
The congregation desires a pastor who is firmly committed to the authority, inerrancy, sufficiency, and clarity of Holy Scripture. He should be a man who preaches the whole counsel of God with reverence, conviction, doctrinal soundness, and pastoral warmth. His preaching should be Christ-centered, text-driven, and applicatory, proclaiming both the grace of God in the gospel and the necessity of repentance, faith, holiness, and perseverance.
As a congregation of the Presbyterian Church in America, Lebanon seeks a minister who gladly and sincerely receives and adopts the Westminster Confession of Faith and Catechisms as containing the system of doctrine taught in Holy Scripture. He should be ordained as a teaching elder in the PCA or eligible for transfer or ordination in the PCA. He should be committed to Presbyterian polity, the ordinary means of grace, reverent worship, the faithful administration of the sacraments, and the shepherding responsibilities entrusted to the elders of Christ’s church.
The next pastor should have the heart of a shepherd. He should love the people of God, pray for them faithfully, visit them in their homes, comfort the sick and grieving, encourage the weak, admonish the wandering, and patiently care for Christ’s sheep. He should be approachable, steady, humble, and willing to walk with the congregation through both seasons of joy and seasons of trial.
Lebanon Presbyterian Church would be well served by a pastor who understands the character and needs of a rural / small-town congregation. He should be willing to know the people personally, serve the community thoughtfully, and labor patiently for the long-term spiritual health of the church. He should not measure success merely by outward numbers, but by faithfulness, love, unity, holiness, and growth in grace.
The congregation seeks a pastor who is able to lead without domineering, labor alongside the elders and deacons, encourage the gifts of the members, and foster peace and unity within the body. He should be a man of prayer, wisdom, patience, and spiritual maturity, able to teach sound doctrine and also to refute error with clarity and charity.
He should be committed to evangelism and missions, both locally and abroad. Lebanon desires a pastor who will encourage the congregation to bear witness to Christ in Abbeville County and beyond, cultivating a spirit of gospel compassion, hospitality, and prayer for the advance of Christ’s kingdom.
Finally, the next pastor should be a man who loves Christ, loves His Word, loves His church, and desires to spend himself in the service of the Chief Shepherd. Lebanon Presbyterian Church needs not merely a pulpit speaker, but a faithful pastor, teacher, shepherd, and servant who will lead the congregation in worship, discipleship, fellowship, witness, and hope until Christ returns.
