Night 3: Dependence on God for Strength and Sustenance
Welcome and Opening Prayer:
Good evening, everyone. Welcome to the third night of our weeknight devotional series, “Lessons from Samson: Discovering God’s Grace in Our Flaws.” Tonight, we will focus on the importance of depending on God for our strength and sustenance. Let us begin with a word of prayer.
Heavenly Father, we thank You for bringing us together once again to delve into Your Word. As we reflect on Samson’s reliance on You in moments of desperation, help us to recognize our own need for Your strength and provision. Teach us to trust in Your unfailing grace and power. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
Scripture Reading: Judges 15:18-19
“And he was very thirsty, and he called upon the LORD and said, ‘You have granted this great salvation by the hand of your servant, and shall I now die of thirst and fall into the hands of the uncircumcised?’ And God split open the hollow place that is at Lehi, and water came out from it. And when he drank, his spirit returned, and he revived. Therefore the name of it was called En-hakkore; it is at Lehi to this day.”
Reflection and Discussion:
1. Samson’s Intense Thirst and Cry to the LORD:
After his great victory over the Philistines, Samson finds himself in a moment of intense physical need. Despite his remarkable strength and accomplishments, he experiences the basic human need for water. In his desperation, he calls out to the LORD, acknowledging that his strength and deliverance come from God: “You have granted this great salvation by the hand of your servant, and shall I now die of thirst and fall into the hands of the uncircumcised?”
This prayer reveals Samson’s recognition of his dependence on God. It reminds us that no matter how capable or strong we may feel, we all encounter situations where our own resources are insufficient. It is in these moments that we must turn to God, trusting in His provision and strength.
2. God’s Miraculous Provision:
In response to Samson’s cry, God splits open the hollow place at Lehi, providing water for him. This act of divine provision not only meets Samson’s immediate physical need but also revives his spirit, demonstrating God’s care and faithfulness. The place is named En-hakkore, meaning “Spring of the Caller,” commemorating God’s miraculous provision.
This story serves as a powerful reminder that God hears our cries and provides for us in our times of need. Philippians 4:13 encapsulates this truth: “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” Our abilities and successes are rooted in God’s strength, not our own.
