Day 3: Seeking God’s Guidance

Scripture Reading: Judges 13:8-14

“Then Manoah prayed to the Lord and said, ‘O Lord, please let the man of God whom you sent come again to us and teach us what we are to do with the child who will be born.’ And God listened to the voice of Manoah, and the angel of God came again to the woman as she sat in the field. But Manoah her husband was not with her. So the woman ran quickly and told her husband, ‘Behold, the man who came to me the other day has appeared to me.’ And Manoah arose and went after his wife and came to the man and said to him, ‘Are you the man who spoke to this woman?’ And he said, ‘I am.’ And Manoah said, ‘Now when your words come true, what is to be the child’s manner of life, and what is his mission?’ And the angel of the Lord said to Manoah, ‘Of all that I said to the woman let her be careful. She may not eat of anything that comes from the vine, neither let her drink wine or strong drink, or eat any unclean thing. All that I commanded her let her observe.'”

Devotional Thought:

After receiving the incredible news from the angel of the Lord, Manoah’s response was one of humility and dependence on God. He recognized the gravity of the promise and sought further guidance from God to ensure they would raise their child according to His will. Manoah’s prayer, “O Lord, please let the man of God whom you sent come again to us and teach us what we are to do with the child who will be born,” reveals his earnest desire for divine direction.

God graciously answered Manoah’s prayer by sending the angel again. Manoah’s wife, upon seeing the angel, ran to fetch her husband. When Manoah met the angel, he asked for more details about how to raise their promised child. The angel reiterated the instructions previously given, emphasizing the importance of adhering to God’s commands.

This passage underscores the importance of seeking God’s guidance, especially when faced with significant responsibilities or decisions. Manoah’s example teaches us to rely on God’s wisdom and to be diligent in prayer when seeking His direction. Just as God responded to Manoah’s earnest prayer, He is faithful to guide us when we seek Him with all our hearts.

Reflective Questions:

  1. How often do you seek God’s guidance in your daily decisions?
    • Reflect on your current prayer habits. Do you routinely seek God’s direction, or do you tend to rely on your own understanding? How can you improve your practice of seeking God’s guidance?
  2. What steps can you take to cultivate a habit of prayerful dependence on God?
    • Consider practical ways to incorporate seeking God’s guidance into your daily routine. This might include setting specific times for prayer, journaling your prayers, or seeking counsel from other believers. What can you do to make seeking God’s guidance a regular part of your life?

Prayer Focus:

Pray for a heart that seeks God’s wisdom in all decisions. Ask for guidance in specific areas of your life where you need direction. Thank Him for His faithfulness in answering prayer and for the wisdom He provides.

Prayer: “Lord, I come before You recognizing my need for Your wisdom and guidance. Like Manoah, I seek Your direction for my life and the decisions I face. Teach me to depend on You more fully and to trust in Your leading. Help me to bring every concern and decision to You in prayer, knowing that You are faithful to guide me. Thank You for the assurance that You hear my prayers and provide the wisdom I need. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Action Step:

Identify a decision or challenge you are facing. Dedicate time each day this week to pray for God’s guidance. Make a list of areas where you need His direction and bring them before Him in prayer.

  • Identify the Challenge: Think about a specific decision you are facing, such as a career move, a relationship issue, or a personal goal.
  • Pray for Guidance: Spend dedicated time each day praying for God’s wisdom and direction in this area. Ask Him to make His will clear to you.
  • Seek Confirmation: Look for confirmation of God’s guidance through His Word, circumstances, and counsel from trusted friends or mentors.

Daily Reflection:

  • Morning: Reflect on Manoah’s response to seek God’s guidance. Consider areas in your life where you need to seek God’s direction.
  • Midday: Spend time in prayer, asking God for wisdom in specific areas of your life. Write down your prayers and any thoughts that come to mind.
  • Evening: Reflect on any guidance or insights you have received from God throughout the day. How is He leading you?

Daily Meditation Verse:

  • James 1:5: “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given to him.”

By dedicating time to seek God’s guidance through prayer, we cultivate a deeper dependence on Him and open our hearts to His leading. Just as God responded to Manoah’s earnest prayer, He will also guide us when we seek Him with sincerity and faith. Trust in His wisdom and lean on His understanding, knowing that He is faithful to lead you in the paths of righteousness.
